Station Medical Center sets health fair

The Station Medical Center, 17th Street and Ninth Avenue, Altoona, will hold its third annual Women’s Health Fair from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Exhibitors will be available with information and to answer questions on a number of health-related topics, including diabetes, fibromyalgia, joint pain, cardiology and depression.

There will be additional exhibitors with fun items such as jewelry, home decor and more.

The fair is open to the public and is geared to women of all ages. There is no cost for admission.

J.C. Blair marks Women’s Health Week

HUNTINGDON – This week, in celebration of National Women’s Health Week, J.C. Blair Hospital is asking women to take charge of their health. The hospital is providing a series of events to give women an opportunity to participate in health check-ups, screenings, education and an exercise program.

Noon today -?The hospital auxiliary will host its full membership meeting in J.C. Blair’s Education Center. Lois McGuire from PinnacleHealth will provide a Skin Glow Analysis and information on the essence of sun safety and prevention of skin cancer. All are welcome to attend the luncheon for $5. If you would like to join the auxiliary, you may do so for $10, and lunch will be included. Call 643-8833 for information.

11 a..m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday – J.C. Blair’s bone density technologist will offer free heel screenings in the bone density suite to measure bone density, which is used to screen for osteoporosis. Learn about prevention, testing and treatment. For information, call 506-4007.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday – J.C. Blair will offer free blood pressure screenings, body mass index calculations and a circuit exercise class taught by J.C. Blair’s health and wellness coordinator Andrea Teeters in J.C. Blair’s Education Center. Participants should wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and sneakers. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday – J.C. Blair will offer a “Superwoman Syndrome and Stress” open house in the J.C. Blair Community Health Resource Library. J.C. Blair’s director of behavioral health services will be offering a self-assessment tool to identify life stressors, how to manage them and when it is time to seek help. 8 a.m. Saturday -?J.C. Blair’s Women’s Imaging Center will sponsor a “Mom and Me and Grandma Makes Three” mammogram and tea in the Women’s Imaging Center. Mothers, daughters and grandmothers can share the experience of a 3D screening mammogram, a free professional photography portrait and a special tea. A doctor’s order and appointment are required. Appointments will be scheduled from 8 to 11:45 a.m. For an appointment, call 506-4007.

Tyrone Hospital offers diabetes program

TYRONE -?The Tyrone Fitness and Wellness Center will provide a free educational program titled “Learning About Diabetes.”

The program will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. May 19 in the main lobby at the new Tyrone Health & Wellness Building on the Tyrone Hospital campus at 154 Hospital Drive.

The program includes a free blood sugar screening. Attendees will learn signs and symptoms of diabetes, key diabetic terms such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, the meaning of lab values such as HbA1C and blood glucose levels, what to do if you suspect you have diabetes, diabetic meal plans, how to effectively manage diabetes, risk factors and steps you can take to lower your risk of developing the disease.

The program will be presented by Leigh Montecalvo, diabetic educator.

BIG-H to hold movie night May 19

HUNTINGDON – The Brain Injury support Group-Huntingdon will meet at 7 p.m. May 19 at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Education Center, 860 Bryan St., across from the main hospital.

The movie “A Calling of Courage” will be shown. It is based on the true story of a young girl fighting to get out of a coma.
