Mother Nature delays PIAA schedule

Facing the threat of yet another winter storm, the PIAA decided to postpone nearly a third of the basketball tournament second-round games scheduled for Wednesday – including the Class A games involving the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic and Claysburg-Kimmel girls – to today.

Tipoff times and venues will remain the same for the Lady Marauders and Lady Bulldogs. Guilfoyle is facing Serra Catholic at Richland High School in Johnstown at 7 p.m., while Claysburg is heading to Hempfield High School in Greensburg to take on Kennedy Catholic at 6:30 p.m.

All four western region Class A girls games were postponed. The only game slated to be played in the southwestern part of the state that wasn’t pushed back a day was the Elizabeth Forward/Mount Pleasant Class AAA girls game, although it was moved to Hempfield as a stand-alone 7 p.m. game.

The PIAA cited “deteriorating weather conditions, a severe weather forecast and poor travel conditions” as the reason to delay the games. Winners from tonight’s contests are scheduled to return to the court on Saturday.

In addition, the PIAA announced that the site of Bishop Carroll’s Class A boys quarterfinal game on Friday will be Gateway High School in Monroeville, where the Huskies just won on Tuesday. Carroll, undefeated at 27-0, is meeting District 7’s Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
