Strong start lifts Huskies

JOHNSTOWN – The start of Thursday night’s District 6 Class A boys basketball playoff game at Richland High School could not have gone better for Bishop Carroll or worse for Glendale.

A 19-0 run to open the contest by the the top-seeded Huskies set the tone for the final outcome, which produced a 78-42 win that sent Bishop Carroll into the semifinal round Monday against Juniata Valley.

“Our defense keyed our offense,” said Huskies coach Cosie Aliquo, whose squad improved to 20-4 on the year. “We came out and pressed them full-court, and we got some steals right off the bat.”

Bishop Carroll capitalized on 14 first-half turnovers by the Vikings (13-10), which led to numerous transition baskets that helped build Huskies’ leads of 19-3 at the end of the first quarter and 46-15 at halftime.

“We got down early and hung our heads,” Glendale coach Ryan Pastva said. “That got us into an even bigger hole. Bishop Carroll is a well-coached team that hustles, works hard and shoots the ball well.”

Bishop Carroll’s Scott Ranck, Brandon Martinazzi and Marcus Lee combined to hit nine of their first 12 shots during the Huskies’ opening surge. Martinazzi and Ranck each finished with a game-high 24 points, while Lee added 16 points and nine rebounds.

“When we get everybody spread out and scoring, we’re tough to guard,” Aliquo said.

A layup by Marcus McCrae cut the Glendale deficit to 14 in the opening minute of the second quarter, but that was as close as the Vikings got. Bishop Carroll then reeled off a 14-1 run capped off by Ranck’s layup that made it 33-6 and effectively put the contest out of reach.

“We didn’t let up,” Aliquo said. “We didn’t want to have a letdown and let them back in the game.”

The Vikings hit four third-quarter 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to seriously threaten the substantial Bishop Carroll advantage.

“We came out and played with some pride in the second half,” Pastva said.

“We need to keep playing defense the way we’re capable of,” Aliquo said.
